GURGAON: Low-floor buses are fine, but Gurgaon, it seems, still doesnt trust the public transport system. According to a survey commissioned by the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon on traffic, 90% of the citys 20 lakh population is forced to use private transport because the public transport system is not good enough.
At the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway toll plaza, two-wheelers make up for 26.1% of traffic while cars constitute 71.3%.
On the same stretch, mini, government and private buses constitute only 1.7% of the traffic. These figures should worry the transport department.
On the Gurgaon-Faridabad road, two-wheelers and cars make up 39.9% and 57.5% of traffic respectively, while mini, government, and private buses make up 0.1, 0.5 and 0.1 per cent of traffic respectively. The composition of traffic is similar on stretches like Gurgaon-Sohna Road, MG Road, Kapashera border and Gurgaon-Pataudi Road. The survey was conducted at eight different locations and revealed that most residents do not travel outside Gurgaon, but need public transport to commute within the city. The trip length distribution survey revealed that a majority of trips are short and generated within Gurgaon. In most parts of the city, commuters journeys end within 10km, and only 10% commuters travel beyond 10km.
